This is the twenty-fourth in a series of indexes of all the divisions, corps, armies and commands of the US Army during WWII. Others will be published as they are completed.

This work includes all decorations cited in the general orders of the 11th Airborne Division.* Please note that many decorations presented to members of the 11th Airborne Division may have been cited in general orders of other commands. Most awards of the Purple Heart Medal were cited in the general orders of the hospitals that the men were evacuated to, therefore not included in this work. This index does not attempt to list awards of the Bronze Star Medal that were retroactively awarded under Change 13 to Army Regulation 600-45, Department of the Army, 4 November 1947. Most awards of the CIB and CMB were made in general orders of the respective infantry regiments. I have made no attempt to list the Unit Awards, awards of specific Battle Stars, and Good Conduct Medals.

This index also includes the names from the Adjutant General’s Battle Death Report of the 11th Airborne Division. This lists all the men from the 11th Airborne Division who gave their lives in combat.

Most general orders of this division do not give unit assignments. These general orders just state the branch of service. Therefore it is hard to determine from the general orders if the decoration recipient was part of the 11th Airborne Division or attached to the 11th Airborne Division. I therefore listed each entry by the branch of service or unit listed in the corresponding general order. Since the 11th Airborne Division served as part of the army of the occupation of Japan some of the members cited in later general orders of the 11th Airborne Division were actually members of other commands when their decorations were earned. I have noted these when I could positively identify them. I could only identify the ones which were cited for service in a campaign in which the 11th Airborne Division did not participate, there are likely others not identified in this manor because the recipient served in the same campaign as the 11th Airborne Division.

How to read the sources: (GO#46,1945,11ABDiv) is broken down as “GO” (General Order), “#” (Number 46, 1945), “11ABDiv” (11th Airborne Division). Information cited as (11ABDivAGOBD) is from the Adjutant General’s 1947 Battle Death Report for the 11th Airborne Division. Entries that are in italics are men how were either Killed in Action or Died of Wounds. Entries that are in italics are men who were either Killed in Action or Died of Wounds.

                * The following general orders are missing from the 11th Airborne Division’s file at the National Archives:

(GO#22,1943,11ABDiv) (GO#23,1943,11ABDiv) (GO#12,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#13,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#49,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#50,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#55,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#56,1944,11ABDiv) (GO#77,1945,11ABDiv) (GO#101,1945,11ABDiv) (GO#114,1945,11ABDiv) (GO#175,1945,11ABDiv) (GO#33,1946,11ABDiv)

General Orders from the 1947, 1948 & 1949 series still need to be located and reviewed for additional late awards.

Anyone with copies of any of the missing General Orders is encouraged to contact the author.
