This is the first in a series of indexes of all the medical units and hospitals of the US Army during WWII that awarded Purple Heart Medals in their general orders. Others will be published as they are completed. This work includes all Purple Heart Medals cited in the general orders of the 27th Evacuation Hospital. Please note that this index only lists those service members who received their Purple Heart Medal from the 27th Evacuation Hospital. Many additional men may have been treated by the 27th Evacuation Hospital during WWII and were either not eligible for the Purple Heart Medal or received from another unit that also treated their wounds. How to read the sources: (GO#46,1945,27EvacHosp) is broken down as “GO” (General Order), “#” (Number 46, 1945), “27EvacHosp” (27th Evacuation Hospital). The 27th Evacuation Hospital appears to have been in the 7th Army’s chain of evacuation. The 27th Evacuation Hospital published Purple Heart Medal numbers in many of its general orders. However they did not begin to do so until (GO#54,1944,27EvacHosp), which is dated 29 October 1944 and they stopped before the end of 1944. The 27th Evacuation Hospital resumed publishing medal numbers later in 1945; the publication of medal numbers then became spotty until it ceased all together. When the medal number was included in the general order, it also appears in this work after the decoration abbreviation and prefixed by the “#” sign. Several of the medal numbers awarded were rescinded in later general orders. Every effort has been made to minimize errors and misspelled names. An error may be attributable to the source document, or may have occurred while transcribing the names/units. Some of the original documents are of very poor print quality, making them difficult to decipher.
