This is the twenty-first in a series of indexes of all the divisions, corps, armies and commands of the US Army in WWII. Others will be published as they are completed. This work includes all decorations cited in the general orders of the 89th division. * Please note that some decorations awarded to members of this division may have been cited in the general orders of other commands. Many awards of the Purple Heart Medal are missing, for example, as they were cited in the general orders of the hospitals which received the evacuated men. This index does not attempt to list all of the Bronze Star Medals retroactively awarded under Change 13 to Army Regulation 600-45, Department of the Army, 4 November 1947. Most awards of the CIB and CMB were made in general orders of the respective infantry regiments and are listed here if cited in the general orders of the 89th Infantry division. Unit Awards, awards of specific Battle Stars, and Good conduct Medals are not listed.. This index also includes the names of all men who gave their lives in combat listed in the Adjutant General’s Battle Death Report of the 89th Division.. How to read the sources: (GO#46,1945,89DIV) is broken down as “GO” (General Order), “#” (Number 46, 1945), “89DIV” (89th Division). Information cited as (89DIVAGOBD) is from the Adjutant General’s 1947 Battle Death Report for the 89th Infantry Division. Italicized entries are men who were either “Killed in Action” or “Died of Wounds.” Most general orders of this state the branch of service, but do not give complete unit assignments. It is assumed that most decoration recipients were assigned to the 89th division, unless they are listed in a branch of service that was not organic to this division. (Example: Tank Destroyer Battalion, etc). The possibility of error exists with decoration recipients whose branch of service is listed as “Field Artillery,” when they may actually have served in the 602nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Please note that some decoration recipients may have been assigned to Headquarters, 89th division or Headquarters, 89th division Artillery, but are listed in a smaller organization, as I have no way of knowing which men were in headquarter s units and which were inline units. Citations of decorations for “gallantry” or “heroic achievement” do give the unit information in the actual citation. Prior to General Order #26, the numeral designation of the regiment or separate battalion is missing. Starting with General Order #39, the regiment, separate battalion or separate company designation is given for recipients of decorations for meritorious service or Purple Heart Medals. The last general order in the National Archives file is #127, dated December 1, 1945. The 89th Division was deactivated on December 17, 1945. Therefore it is possible that there may be additional general orders, numbered beyond #127. Anyone with a copy of any 89th Division General Orders numbered beyond 127 is encouraged to contact the author. Every effort has been made to minimize errors and misspelled names. An error may be attributable to the source document, or may have occurred while transcribing the names/units. Some of the original documents are of very poor print quality, making them difficult to decipher.
