This is the ninth in a series of indexes of all the Divisions, Corps and Armies of the US Army in WWII. Others will be published as they are completed. This work includes all decorations cited in the general orders of the 93rd Infantry Division. * Please note that some decorations awarded to members of this division may have been cited in the general orders of other commands. Many awards of the Purple Heart Medal are missing, for example, as they were cited in the general orders of the hospitals which received the evacuated men. This index does not attempt to list all of the Bronze Star Medals retroactively awarded under Change 13 to Army Regulation 600-45, Department of the Army, 4 November 1947. Most awards of the CIB and CMB were made in general orders of the respective infantry regiments and are listed here if cited in the general orders of the 93rd Infantry Division. Unit Awards, awards of specific Battle Stars, and Good Conduct Medals are not listed. General orders of this division state branch of service, but do not give complete unit assignments. It is assumed that most decoration recipients were assigned to the 93rd Division, unless they are listed in a branch of service that was not organic to this division. (Example Tank Destroyer Battalion, etc.). It is difficult to determine from the general orders whether a decoration recipient was part of the 93rd Division or a member of a service unit attached to either the Division or the Island Command, which was also under the divisional commander. I feel reasonably certain that most, if not all recipients whose branch of service was part of the combat arms, were members of the 93rd Division. The possibility of errors, occur with decoration recipients whose branch of service is listed as Medical Department, Ordnance Department, Quartermaster Corps, etc. The recipient could have been assigned to a station hospital or a supply dump on one of the Islands occupied by troops of the 93rd Division, and therefore, attached to it or the Island Command. Please note that some decoration recipients may have been assigned to Headquarters, 93rd Division or Headquarters, 93rd Division Artillery but are listed in a smaller organization, as I have no way of knowing which men were in headquarters units and which were in line units. How to read the sources: (GO#46,1945,93DIV) is broken down as “GO” (General Order), “#” (Number 46, 1945), “93DIV” (93rd Division). Information cited as (93DIVAGOBD) is from the Adjutant General’s 1947 Battle Death Report for the 93rd Infantry Division. Italicized entries are men who were either “:Killed in Action” or “Died or Wounds.” From April 1, 1944 through June 6,1944, there was a Provisional Brigade of the 93rd Infantry Division formed around the 25th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. All awards, announced in the general orders of the Provisional Brigade of the 93rd Division are sourced in this index in the following manner: (GO#3,1944,93DIVProvBDE) * The following general orders are missing from the 93rd Division’s file at the National Archives: (GO#2,1944,93DIV) (GO#4,1944,93DIV) (GO#7,1944,93DIV) (GO#8,1944,93DIV) (GO#28,1944,93DIV) (GO#20,1945,93DIV) (GO#93,1945,93DIV) (GO#94,1945,93DIV) I was unable to locate any general orders issued in 1946, although I believe the 93rd Division was active during all or part of that year. There may, therefore, be additional awards. Anyone with a copy of any of the missing general orders or general orders dated during 1946 is encouraged to contact the author. Every effort has been made to minimize errors and misspelled names. An error may be attributable to the source document, or may have occurred while transcribing the names/units. Some of the original documents are of very poor print quality, making them difficult to decipher. Corrections with supporting documentation can be sent to D-Day Militaria, at the address mentioned below.
