This is the second in a series of indexes of all the medical units and hospitals of the US Army during WWII that awarded Purple Heart Medals in their general orders. Others will be published as they are completed. This work includes all Purple Heart Medals cited in the general orders of the 9th General Hospital. Please note that this index only lists those service members who received their Purple Heart Medal from the 9th General Hospital. Many additional men may have been treated by the 9th General Hospital during WWII and were either not eligible for the Purple Heart Medal or received it from another unit that also treated their wounds. How to read the sources: (GO#46,1945,9GenHosp) is broken down as “GO” (General Order), “#” (Number 46, 1945), “9GenHosp” (9th General Hospital). The 9th General Hospital published Purple Heart Medal numbers in many of its general orders. However (GO#18,1944,9GenHosp), which is dated November 22, 1944, was the last general order which had the medal numbers penciled in. When the medal number was included in the general order, it also appears in this work after the decoration abbreviation and prefixed by the “#” sign. Several of the medal numbers awarded were rescinded in later general orders. Every effort has been made to minimize errors and misspelled names. An error may be attributable to the source document, or may have occurred while transcribing the names/units. Some of the original documents are of very poor print quality, making them difficult to decipher.
